Industry Issues

Energy is a vital element in almost every part of daily life, from keeping our homes warm in the winter and cool in the summer, to powering the cars we drive, to running the computers and machinery at our workplaces. Because energy is so important in our daily lives, and critical to a healthy economy, energy policy and environmental issues related to energy production are at the forefront of public policy development in Washington D.C. and in Lansing and other state capitals. Information on some of the key energy issues affecting Michigan and DTE Energy is available by following the links below.

Michigan's Energy Future

Early in 2007, the former chair of the Michigan Public Service commission released his 21st Century Energy Plan for the state. The report clearly indicates growth in the next decade that will require additional electric base load generation. Further, Michigan’s fleet of base load plants is among the oldest in the country and these plants will need to be replaced. Meeting the state’s projected need for new generating capacity while addressing concerns over the impact of power production on the environment and the cost of energy will require creative solutions on several fronts.

Environment

DTE Energy has consistently supported reasonable controls on power plant emissions as part of a broad approach to continued reduction of emissions from the utility sector, other industries and transportation. In the last 30 years – while increasing generation output by about 46 percent – our Detroit Edison electric utility has reduced emissions of particulates by 87 percent, sulfur dioxide by 63 percent and nitrogen oxide by 59 percent. The company expects to spend about $1 billion in the next 10 years to achieve additional significant reductions of those emissions.
